Discovery Phase

Before the heavy machinery rolls in to transform the front of the FEED Media Art Center into a true beacon for Downtown Erie, an incredible process is happening behind the scenes: discovery.

Rob from Shearer and Son Contracting Services recently sat down with FEED's Brad Ford and Director of Erie Art Company to talk about what it takes to peel back the historical layers of the building's facade. Uncovering what lies beneath the surface is a critical first step before we build out our massive, state-of-the-art public digital canvas.

A massive thank you to the City of Erie Government and the ECGRA - Erie County Gaming Revenue Authorityfor their incredible support through the Anchor Building Grant. Together, we're honoring Erie's architectural past while paving the way for the future of real-time media art!

Stay tuned as we reveal what we find before the walls come down.

Established in 2022, FEED Media Art Center is devoted to the production, exhibition and preservation of all forms of media art.

The Partnership

FEED Media Art Center is grateful to bring distinctive resources to a collaborative partnership. Though still young, we’ve built a solid foundation: a renovated century‑old anchor building transformed into a world‑class digital arts facility located in a walkable neighborhood within one of the region’s most underserved ZIP codes. Our galleries and studios pair leading‑edge media technology with high ceilings, exposed brick, well‑worn hardwood floors, and structural red iron and Corten steel—spaces that invite experimentation and public engagement.

By partnering with Erie Art Company and drawing on the support of other community partners, FEED will expand programmatic reach and deepen impact. Together we will:

  • Leverage complementary strengths—FEED’s media‑arts infrastructure and technical expertise alongside Erie Art Company’s networks, pedagogy, and audience relationships—to create richer, more sustainable offerings.

  • Increase access to grants through FEED’s fiscal sponsorship, cultivating a larger and more diverse pool of makers and appreciators.

  • EACo will expand and streamline fiscal sponsorship to remove barriers for artists and project leaders working in realtime media art. By serving as a nonprofit fiscal sponsor, FEED allows eligible creators to apply for grants, accept tax-deductible donations, and manage project funds under EACo’ 501(c)(3) status—without requiring artists to incorporate their own nonprofit.

  • Collaborate on workshops, residencies, public events, and exhibitions that amplify artists’ work, foreground critical engagement with media technology, and welcome audiences from Erie and beyond.

We recognize that powerful media tools are increasingly accessible, but that equitable, thoughtful use requires guidance, community, and resources. FEED is ready to contribute facilities, staff expertise, programming capacity, and an expanding network to enrich residency experiences and learning opportunities.

We look forward to a partnership with Erie Art Company that fosters mutual support, shared growth, and the development of an extended media‑arts family—one that strengthens artists, uplifts our neighborhood, and opens hearts and minds across the region.

Exploratory Work to Begin in Partnership Between FEED Media Art Center, Shearer and Son Contracting Services, and Erie Art Company Beginning August

FEED Media Art Center and Erie Art Company (EACo) will begin exploratory facade work at 1307 State Street in August, partnering with Shearer and Son Contracting Services. The project is funded by a $100,000 ECGRA Anchor Building Grant, supporting facade improvements and a future outdoor screen for public digital art. Crews will assess the building's structure ahead of restoration. A temporary safety barricade for pedestrians will be erected during work, with the sidewalk and neighboring businesses staying open. Brad Ford thanked ECGRA for its partnership; Benton Bainbridge confirmed August programming continues, with the entire block remaining accessible.
